Handsfree Group Help American Water to Improve Fleet Safety

Blind Spot Statistics

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that nearly 840,000 blind spot accidents occur each year in the United States resulting in 300 fatalities.

Employing 6,700 dedicated professionals, American Water provide regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater services and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in 47 states and in Ontario, Canada. They are the largest and most geographically diverse U.S. water and wastewater utility company and they consider safety as a core value rather than just a key strategic point.

With these statistics and their core value in mind, they realized their fleet operations required additional technology to further protect their drivers, and the general public, whilst also improving their blind spot accident statistics. They were looking for a simple yet fail safe solution. Handsfree Group were able to provide expert advice on the type of equipment that could be installed to improve safety, for both drivers and pedestrians.

“Testing the Water” – Camera and Sensor System Pilot Scheme

Handsfree Group installed a pilot trial of their innovative camera and sensor system in to two American Water vehicles in two seperate states.  Each vehicle was fitted with a reverse camera, blind side camera, side sensors and monitor, all being Handsfree Group TECh branded and installed by Handsfree Group’s MECP accredited engineer team.

This system helps to eliminate blind spots by giving the driver full visibility to the right side and rear of the truck via the monitor whilst also warning the driver of any obstructions via the audible sound and cue light provided by the sensors. With this multi-dimensional approach, the system is fail safe.

A Safer Future

American Water continuously invest in vehicle safety, the TECh camera and sensor pilot scheme is a great step forwards, in achieving their goals of reducing incidents that can lead to injury and zero “near miss” incidents.

American Water invest over 60,000 hours of safety training annually to their staff. Improving and supporting vehicle safety is a high priority and significantly reduces their vehicle running costs.
